Volunteer

Share your Talent, Build a Friendship

VolunteerThe Arc of Baltimore needs volunteers to share their time and talent with people with developmental disabilities.  Internships, individual, group, and family volunteer opportunities are available at varied locations in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

Make a difference in someone's life.  Volunteer!

The people2people program matches a person from the community with a person with developmental disabilities to share time, talent and mutual interests. A people2people volunteer will visit a supported Arc home and meet the individuals who live there. Volunteers can spend time with the people and staff playing a board game, discussing current events, playing music or what ever they mutually enjoy doing together. If you have a special interest, skill or talent to share with an individual with a development disability or would like to mentor someone, this volunteer program may be for you! Consider sharing yourself and your interests, make a difference! Volunteer.

Levels of Volunteer and Intern involvement for
The Arc of Baltimore:

No contact with supported individual(s) – Volunteers and interns will provide much needed assistance for The Arc of Baltimore without any type of direct contact with the people we support. Volunteer or intern positions may include working for Human Resources, in development, fund raising, special events, public relations, research, virtual volunteering (web based).

Supervised contact – Volunteers and interns may be working with people we support, but staff is always present. Volunteers and interns may work at an employment or medical day center or as a friendly visitor at a home The Arc supports.

Unsupervised contact – Volunteers and interns are with people we support in various capacities and may be unsupervised. Volunteers and interns could take people out into the community for trips, events or volunteer experiences they enjoy together. Examples of this may be the People2people program based on community connections.

Service Groups – Groups comprised of members from various organizations who assist the agency and the people we support through a variety of opportunities or one-time events. Groups may volunteer directly with supported individuals by assisting or hosting a special event such as a dance, birthday party, reception or celebration. They could also participate in a joint community service project with the people we support such as a stream or park clean up or tree planting, creating care packages for the homeless or military, the possibilities are endless. Groups can come from faith based organizations, schools, colleges and universities, civic, philanthropic, community or businesses.

Service Learning – “Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” (servicelearning.org) Students are required to do service learning for graduation. The Arc of Baltimore is committed to developing meaningful service learning volunteer opportunities for students. Students can volunteer at an employment or medical day program, be a drop-in visitor at a home that The Arc supports or help with a recreational activity such as a social dance, trip, camp or outing.

Foster Care - The Arc of Baltimore trains, certifies, supervises and supports foster families in the Baltimore metropolitan area who care for foster children with special needs. More than 100 children are currently placed and supported through The Arc. Internships are available for students from academic institutions to volunteer in supervised positions within this program.
